Theplainwasrichwithcrops;thereweremanyorchardsoffruittreesandbeyondtheplainthemountainswerebrownandbare.Therewasfightinginthemountainsandatnightwecouldseetheflashesfromtheartillery.Inthedarkitwaslikesummerlightning,butthenightswerecoolandtherewasnotthefeelingofastormcoming.
Sometimesinthedarkweheardthetroopsmarchingunderthewindowandgunsgoingpastpulledbymotor-tractors.Therewasmuchtrafficatnightandmanymulesontheroadswithboxesofammunitiononeachsideoftheirpack-saddlesandgraymotor-trucksthatcarriedmen,:andothertruckswithloadscoveredwithcanvasthatmovedslowerinthetraffic.Therewerebiggunstoomatpassedinthedaydrawnbytractors,thelongbarrelsofthegunscoveredwithgreenbranchesandgreenleafybranchesandvineslaidoverthetractors.Tothenorthwecouldlookacrossavalleyandseeaforestofchestnuttreesandbehinditanothermountainonthissideoftheriver.Therewasfightingforthatmountaintoo,butitwasnotsuccessful,andinthefallwhentherainscametheleavesallfellfromthechestnuttreesandthebrancheswerebareandthetrunksblackwithrain.Thevineyardswerethinandbare,branchedtooandallthecountrywetandbrownanddeadwiththeautumn.Thereweremistsovertheriverandcloudsonthemountainandtruckssplashedmudontheroadandthetroopsweremuddyandwetintheircapes;theirrifleswerewetandundertheircapesthetwoleathercartridge-boxesonthefrontofbelts,grayleatherboxesheavywiththepacksofclipsofthin,long6.5mm.cartridges,bulgedforwardunderthecapessothatthemen,passingontheroad,marchedasthoughtheyweresixmonthsgonewithchild.
Beginningthissummer,evenherethenextseveraldaysofrain,thesun'sangeratonceextinguished,andtheweatherhasbecomeverycoolthatpeoplearefeelingrefreshed.
